Bio

I am Sadia Mim, Assistant Professor of Department of Leather Engineering at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET). I graduated from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology with a Bachelors of Science in Leather Engineering in 2018. I also completed my Master of Science in Leather Engineering from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology in 2022. I've joined as a Lecturer in the Department of Leather Engineering after completing my Bachelors of Science in Leather Engineering degree in 2020.

During my time at from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology, I have worked as a faculty and teaching assistant while participating in research. Within the laboratory, I have utilized tannery solid wastes in tannery wastewater treatment. I have also investigated on different pollutants and contaminants e.g., dyes and heavy metals removal from tannery wastewater. I have also investigated on tannery solid wastes to prepare different value added materials e.g., compost, glue etc. Currently, I'm trying to prepare different composite materials to reduce pollutants from tannery wastewater.  

At present, I'm also honored to serve as a member in the Micro-plastics Solutions Ltd. at KUET where our mission is to combat plastic pollution. The members of our groups are also striving to find out the sustainable alternatives in reducing plastic pollution for the greener future.

Biodegradable plastics have been developed as an alternative to fossil fuel-derived plastics, yet knowledge on pollution by microbioplastics has not been summarized. Here, we review microbioplastics with focus on their formation from biodegradable plastics, their mobility, distribution, impact on soils and aquatic organisms, and their management by recycling, incineration, composting, anaerobic digestion, and landfill disposal. We observe that incorporating carbon–oxygen ester linkages into the molecular backbone of biodegradable plastics, together with plant-derived additives, should enhance the usability of biodegradable plastics by augmenting thermal stability and barrier properties. Separation, recycling, and anaerobic digestion of biodegradable plastic materials should generate methane and biofertilizer.

In a tannery at beamhouse, limed fleshing (LF) is generated during fleshing operation. It is the most generated solid waste of the entire tannery. In this study, atypical co-composting of tannery LF is presented to reduce the generated solid waste in the tannery. The study recommends the LF transformation into nutrient-rich compost is a simple and progressive method without any additional pretreatment.

This work investigated on the adsorption efficacies of contrasting Carica papaya tree adsorbents in removing chromium from the tannery wastewater. The convenience of thermally activated adsorbent was evaluated over chemically modified adsorbents developed employing ZnCl2, KOH, and HNO3.

In leather processing, dyeing is one of the most important operations. A significant amount of wastewater is emitted from the tannery after the dyeing operation. The dyeing wastewater harms aquatic life. Removal of dyestuffs from the real dyeing wastewater has become a great challenge to lessen the tannery's pollution load. The adsorption-oxidation process can be employed for acid dyestuff removal from real tannery effluent. This approach would be implemented as an affordable and sustainable methodology to remove acid dyestuff from real tannery wastewater.

Dye removal from tannery wastewater is now a great concern given the ramifications for the environment in which the effluent ends up. Recently, the application of tannery solid waste as a byproduct to remove pollutants from tannery wastewater has garnered increasing attention. This study aims to extract biochar from tannery liming sludge for the removal of dye from wastewater which may provide a new dimension for state-of-the-art utilization of tannery solid waste as a feasible strategy to remove dye from tannery wastewater.

In this study, activated adsorbents derived from Ficus carica that concluded thermal and chemical-thermal activation for chromium (Cr) adsorption from tannery wastewater are described. The performance of thermal, chemicals (potassium hydroxide and zinc chloride) impregnated thermal adsorbents has been assessed.
